Poems by Judy Jones

The Afterbirth
by Judy Jones

last nite i painted
and destroyed my apartment

carpet stained
turpentine aroma so strong
my head to split in two

hands, feet and hair
multicolored spectacle

even destroyed
two other paintings
in the process

this birth was wild
violent and impossible
but born it was

didnt give a damned for cleanliness
security deposits or even
my health for that matter

no this baby came thru me
powered by the spirit world
and like the worst hurricane
turned all around it
into the stoneage

im looking at this painting
hanging on my wall
smooth
beautiful
smiling back at me

i gave it life
and it took mine

my womb bled
by judy jones

my vagina itched
my womb bled
i cried

another baby
was born
i carried it in a plastic bag
afterbirth and all
to the artshow

she took you from me
and hung you on a wall
for all to see

you are no longer mine
were you ever?

will the world like you
was there ever a creation
that isn't beautiful?
but then, I am your mother

part of me is on that canvas
i have a little less light
and yours has just begun

i looked at my empty bag
and tears of blood poured
down my cheeks

my painting, a death and a birth
